WILD FOOD WALKS

The Mendip Hills

Wild food walks are explorations of the wild food available on the Mendip Hills. You will be guided along hedgerows, through deciduous and coniferous woodland, heathland, common land, grassland and meadows to discover nature’s rich bounty.

Part of the fun is in identifying the wide range of edible plants, and many common everyday plants that are surprisingly tasty and nutritious.

During the walk we'll discuss how to collect wild food safely and legally, and how to prepare and cook various plants so you can maximise the fruits of your own future foraging!

Wild Food Walks Diary

Welcome to my Wild Food Walks Diary. The idea of a photographic diary is to enable you to see the development of wild, edible species photographed throughout their growing season. New species will be added as they appear throughout the year. Please see the Important Note at the end of this page before collecting any of the plants.

All photographs will be taken on the ancient Mendip Hills, often within a short walk of our house along verges and hedgerows, at the base of dry-stone walls and in nearby woods and meadows. We will be going further ‘a-field’ to record other species throughout the year.

Ideas for recipes, how to pick plants and the best time to harvest them will be explored. I will even let you in on my experiments in the kitchen with these goodies, successful or not!

Join me each month, as I add more photographs to record each new season’s edibles, in Wild Food Walks Diary.

Important Note: The emphasis is always on careful and thorough identification of plants that are safe to eat. Never eat a plant unless you are 100 percent confident that you have made a positive identification and that it is safe. In addition, it is worth considering the condition and location of the plant (e.g. not next to a busy road or dog-walking area).
